Day 5 – Wednesday, 27 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 27 June 2014 by Mary-ann29 June 2014

The last day of the conference dawned . . . I attended a session titled “Clinical Practice: What can we learn from each other’s practices?” which included presentations on “Post-Polio Patients in Norway – Past and Present Rehabilitation” by Ingebjorg Irgens, “What can we learn from each other’s practices” by Dr Laura Bertolasi (Italy), and “Breaking the Silence: Coping with polio in a third world country” by Emmanuel Piki (Zimbabwe).

Day 4 – Wednesday, 26 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 26 June 2014 by Mary-ann28 June 2014

Off I toddled to another interesting day of session presentations. I decided on the “Aging and Comorbidity” sessions which included “Aging and Muscle Function Including Sarcopenia” by Jan Lexell, “Osteoporosis” by Helena Burger, and “Medication for Comorbidities; Effects in Post-Polio Syndrome” by Lise Kay. All three sessions were really interesting and I have included photos of the key slides for each.

Day 3 – Wednesday, 25 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 25 June 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

Up and at ‘em, bright and early, this morning to dash down to the bakery which caters for the ‘Breakfast’ part of my B&B. Rush back to the Grand Krasnapolsky to retrieve my poster tube from Jill Pickering’s room so I can put it up between 8:00 and 9:00 am, as instructed . . . only to be told that this would now be put up at 12:00 pm after Princess Beatrix had left the building!

Day 2 – Tuesday, 24 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 24 June 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

. . . I went for another meander around town. There are numerous amusements to occupy one’s time – from partaking in “Magic Mushrooms” to visiting the “Sex Museum”. Apparently, I’m in the “Red Light District” but I can’t say I’ve seen any evidence of it so far. There is a night tour that takes in these ‘sights’ but it will now have to wait until after the conference, which starts tomorrow.

Day 1 – Monday, 23 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 23 June 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

I arrived fairly early in the morning on a flight from Montreal, where I’ve spent the last 2 weeks visiting with my family since PHI’s St Louis Conference. After North America, Amsterdam was surprisingly ‘relaxed’ about people entering the country. No customs forms to fill in, no long queues working their slow and painful way through uber-diligent customs officials, no line up after baggage collection before being able to exit. And for such a busy airport, there was not even any real traffic congestion around the airport.

Day 6 – Tuesday, 4 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 4 June 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

Today was my last day in St Louis and I was collected just after mid-day by PHI’s Joan Headley and taken to Forest Park – a lovely area about 10 minutes out of the St Louis city precinct. I was really pleased that Joan found time to be my tour guide for the afternoon, especially after the mammoth effort she put into the Conference over the previous few days – and in the lead up too, of course!

Day 5 – Monday, 3 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 3 June 2014 by Mary-ann17 July 2014

Today was the last day of PHI’s 11th International Conference and, as you would imagine, there were a lot of pooped people in the audience – me included! Just sitting around listening to people is so tiring, isn’t it? There were a few individual sessions first thing this morning, but following morning tea through to the Conference conclusion, we were treated to research progress and/or outcomes. These were all presented as a Plenary Session.

Day 4 – Monday, 2 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 2 June 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

It’s getting to that time when it’s getting difficult to remember what day it is as we settle into the routine of the Conference. Another awake-in-the-middle-of-the-night episode knocked out the first session for me today. I was keen to attend the “Pause-Relax-Attend: the Mindful Way to Stress Relief” session, but sleep took priority.

Day 3 – Sunday, 1 June 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 1 June 2014 by Mary-ann28 June 2014

Today was the first full day of Post-Polio Health (PHI’s) 11th Conference. There are around 200 people attending this 3 day conference, which is a bit down on previous years – but that may have something to do with the European Post-Polio Conference in Amsterdam towards the end of June, together with a couple of Polio Retreats being run in both Colorado and Alberta, Canada, later in the year.

Day 2 – Saturday, 31 May 2014

Polio Australia Posted on 31 May 2014 by Mary-ann27 June 2014

Goodness, gracious me . . . I’m surprised to find that I’m still having trouble with the time difference – St Louis is 15 hours behind Melbourne. You know what it’s like – still wide-awake at 4:00 am and scolding yourself because you SHOULD be asleep. Hopefully my body clock will have worked itself out by tonight/tomorrow. Luckily, there was no pressing reason for me to be up-and-at-it today as the Conference Registration opened at 12:00 pm and the Pre-Conference Session wasn’t until 3.00pm.
