Every October, Polio Awareness Month shines a light on the tens of thousands of Australians living with the Late Effects of Polio (LEoP). Our message is simple but powerful: We’re Still Here.
Although Australia hasn’t seen a polio epidemic in decades, survivors—whether born here or overseas—are still navigating its lasting impact. Many don’t even realise their health issues are linked to polio. That’s why this month is about raising awareness, sparking conversations, and encouraging both the public and health professionals to ask:
- Was I (or a family member) exposed to the poliovirus?
- Could my symptoms be connected to polio?
We’re especially focused on reaching groups often overlooked—Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and younger survivors who migrated to Australia and may not be recognised within the health system.
Throughout October, we’ll be:
- Hosting online community Zoom chats for survivors and carers
- Encouraging everyone to wear ORANGE at our October 6th Zoom Chat
- Promoting events across Australia, including World Polio Day on 24 October
- Sharing polio survivor stories to ensure voices are heard and remembered
This October, join us in showing polio survivors across the nation: you are not forgotten, and you are not alone.
Throughout October, people across Australia proudly wore ORANGE to show their support for Polio Awareness Month. These photos capture the incredible spirit and solidarity of our community — a reminder that together, we can make sure every polio survivor is seen, heard, and supported.
